SCORE

Liverpool 4, Newcastle 3

By the time Kevin Keegan's Newcastle travelled to Liverpool they had thrown away a 12 point lead in the championship to a Manchester United side inspired by Eric Cantona. A win at third-placed Liverpool was vital to their hopes of winning the title: it would take them level with Man United on top of the table with a game in hand. But with the Reds also chasing the trophy it was never going to be easy.

Both sides played attacking football, and the pace was really fast throughout the game. And the first man to make an impact on the game was Robbie Fowler, who slammed in a goal after two minutes. Newcastle immediately came back strongly, with Les Ferdinand and David Ginola scoring two great goals in the space of four minutes. This gave Newcastle the lead at half-time, but 10 minutes into the second half Robbie Fowler netted his second of the game to draw Liverpool level.

But it didn't last long: the Colombian international Faustino Asprilla scored again for Newcastle, and the Magpies started dreaming of a 3-2 away win. Unfortunately, it didn't last: within minutes Stan Collymore had met a Jason McAteer cross and rifled home a shot for Liverpool. And in the 92 minute he smashed in a winner in front of the Kop end. The result? Liverpool celebrated winning one of the most exciting matches in Premiership history and Manchester United won the league title.
