The 2002/2003 season had not been kind to West Ham. Their forwards simply couldn't score enough goals, while their defence couldn't seem to stop them. By May, they found themselves in the relegation dogfight. A win against Bolton was vital. The only problem was that Bolton also needed a win to avoid relegation, and had won four of their last five games. The question was: would West Ham's team of highly paid internationals be able to beat Bolton's team of experienced relegation battlers?
From the 12th minute, the answer looked to be 'No'. Jay Jay Okocha strode through the middle of the pitch and rattled the West Ham post. Then in the 38th minute he went one better with a sizzling 20 yard shot that dipped into the top corner of the net. The crowd went wild, and Okocha could have added a second two minutes later.
But rather than giving Bolton confidence, the goal quickly turned the side into a nervous wreck. For the rest of the game West Ham did just about everything you can do to score, without actually putting the ball in the net. The end result: Bolton went six points clear of West Ham and stayed in the Premiership. West Ham were relegated.
