SCORE

Liverpool 2, Blackburn 1

When Blackburn arrived at Anfield they were close to achieving something very special - their first championship in 81 years. But to do it they either had to beat Liverpool, or hope that Manchester United couldn't beat West Ham. If United won and Blackburn lost, the title would go to Old Trafford.

Fortunately for Rovers the day got off to its best possible start. Alan Shearer gave Rovers a 1-0 lead, and in London Michael Hughes did the same for West Ham. At half-time Rovers were Premier champions.

But in the second half Liverpool got back into the game and scored an equaliser. Manchester United also scored at Upton Park, and for a moment the championship was balanced on a knife edge. But with just minutes to go before the final whistle at Anfield, people started to get the news that West Ham had held on for a draw. Blackburn would be the champions!

The news quickly spread around the ground and down to the pitch. Soon the Blackburn players were hardly bothering with the ball - even though Jamie Redknapp had scored a second for Liverpool. By the end of the game the whole stadium was celebrating - Blackburn because they had claimed the title; Liverpool because they had won the game and watched rivals Manchester United loose the title.
