CAREER HIGHLIGHTSIan Wright was a late developer and didn't start his Arsenal career until he was 28. But he more than made up for lost time by scoring 24 goals in his first 30 League games. In the 1994/95 season he notched up his first club record by scoring in 10 consecutive games. And on Saturday 13th September 1997, he equalled the tally of Arsenal's all-time scorer Cliff Bastin with 178 goals. By the end of the match he had netted two more to become Arsenal's leading goal-scorer of all time. By the end of his career he had scored 184 goals for the Gunners. He also scored on his debuts (both home and away) in the League, FA Cup, League Cup, Charity Shield, European Cup Winners Cup and UEFA cup. Along with being a hero among Arsenal supporters, Ian Wright was popular throughout the country for playing with his heart on his sleeve and a smile on his face. He also serves as an ideal role model for aspiring black footballers, and since retirement has forged a successful career as a TV show host and football pundit. But just imagine if he'd started earlier! |
