CAREER HIGHLIGHTSTo Southampton fans Matt Le Tissier will always be known as 'Le God'. During his 16 year career with the club he was responsible for more Goal of the Month contenders than the rest of the team put together. Le Tissier is one of the most naturally gifted players ever to have played in the Premier League. He was also fiercely loyal to the Southampton cause and refused to leave when Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs offered big money transfers. In fact, the only time he ever came close to leaving the club was when he was dropped for four games by the manager. On his first game back, 'Le God' single-handedly destroyed Newcastle with two of the best goals the Premiership has ever seen. The manager was sacked shortly after, while 'Le God' kept playing for another 6 years. Around 1994-1996 Le Tissier was at the peak of his form and regularly scoring wonder goals. His trademark free kicks and volleys kept the Saints in the top-flight for years - not to mention his record tally of 49 penalties out of 50. Since retirement he has stayed close to the club and regularly helps young players with their skills. |
