CAREER HIGHLIGHTSPeter Schmeichel is the best goalkeeper ever to have played in the Premiership. In his prime the 'great Dane' seemed to be unbeatable and his shot-stopping skills and commanding presence between the sticks are partly responsible for United's great success in the Premiership. His greatest moment came when he captained the United team during their 1999 Champions League final against Bayern Munich in Barcelona. In a dramatic twist, United scored two injury time goals to claim the trophy and it was Schmeichel who had the job of lifting the cup. He also became one of the few goalkeepers to have scored a goal when he headed in a corner during a UEFA Cup match on September 26 1995. In March 1994 Schmeichel also played his 93rd successive game for United, overtaking Alex Stepney's previous record for the club. Since retiring Schmeichel has become a successful TV pundit. Five years after he left, United are still trying to find a replacement as good as him. |
