When the two sides met at Goodison Park, they couldn't have been in more different situations. The previous season had seen Arsenal collect the League and FA Cup double, whereas Everton had narrowly avoided relegation, sacked their manager and nearly gone bankrupt. To make matters worse for the Toffees, Arsenal had put together a club record 30 match unbeaten run and had scored in every one of their last 48 matches (a Premiership record).
To begin with the game ran true to form: Arsenal had taken the lead through an eighth minute strike from Freddie Ljungberg. Although Thomas Radzinski had pulled one back after 22 minutes, Arsenal looked like they would score again. By the 80th minute Everton's manager, David Moyes, decided to take a chance. He sent on 16-year-old Wayne Rooney, who had only ever played 10 minutes of football for Everton.
Ten minutes later Rooney controlled a long ball on his chest, turned inside two defenders and hit an amazing 30-yard strike that soared over David Seaman, dipped at the last minute and crashed into the net off the underside of the bar. The 90th-minute winner caused fantastic celebrations in the stands and turned "Roonaldo" into a national hero overnight.
