Pele of Brazil is widely regarded as the best footballer ever. One of his most famous moments was in the 1970 World Cup when he had a shot at goal from the halfway line that only narrowly missed the net.
At Selhurst Park in 1996, a young David Beckham was a unknown footballer taking his first steps in the professional game. Receiving the ball a metre inside his own half, Beckham was looking for a United player to pass to when he suddenly noticed that the Wimbledon goalkeeper, Neil Sullivan, had crept off his line. He instantly unleashed an amazing shot that travelled half the length of the pitch and headed straight towards the Wimbledon goal. Spotting the danger, Sullivan desperately tried to scramble his way back towards the net. But the ball had been struck so well that he had no chance of stopping it, and it flew into the top corner. Beckham had scored from inside his own half!
So, at the very start of his career Beckham had achieved what the great Pele narrowly failed to do at his peak. In a mixture of shock and happiness, the whole of United's bench leapt in the air to celebrate. Even Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that he didn't think it was possible to do. It was United's 300th Premiership goal, and made Beckham famous overnight.
