In the late 1980's and early 1990's, Arsenal were famous for one thing: their defence. Under the leadership of Tony Adams the club had earned the nickname 'boring Arsenal' because of their ability to stop the opposition from scoring while somehow stealing a single goal at the other end. 1-0 wins were a speciality.
Liverpool on the other hand had suddenly started to lose their gift for producing championship-winning sides. Although the new team had good forwards and a stylish midfield, it was better known for a back line that had more holes than a rusty bucket!
So when the teams squared up at Anfield, most people expected another Arsenal 'bore-draw'. At the very least they thought Liverpool would concede a goal. However, what they got were 4 minutes and 32 seconds of brilliance by Robbie Fowler - as that is exactly how long it took him to score the fastest hat-trick in Premiership history. This won the game for Liverpool almost before it had begun, and the third goal in particular (an delicate flick past David Seaman's leg while sliding towards the near post on his bottom!) must have given the Gunners' defence nightmares.
Fowler went on to score 31 goals in the season and become PFA Young Player of the Year.
