A Safe Environment
Everyone has concerns about Internet safety. GridClub promotes Internet safety on this site through an area called the Cybercafé. Children who go to Cybercafé will find a range of activities to explain the correct use of email, appropriate behavior to use in on social networking sites and in chat rooms, how to web browse and text message and more.
This site is approved by the government ICT agency BECTA.
The GridClub Learning Centre is a self-contained environment. There are no links to external sites from where children are playing the games. The only links on the site are from the parents' and teachers' areas within the subscription part. Here you can find more advice about Internet safety.
In 2004, GridClub won an ISPA (Internet Service Providers Association) award for
its contribution to Internet safety. Peter Robbins, Chief Executive
at the Internet Watch Foundation said:
"This award is well-deserved by the GridClub
team. It is an impressive site and it is evident that considerable creativity and
thought has gone into the design of an engaging, interactive portal for children and
young people. Particularly, the advice on safety is provided in the context of
concrete situations rather than as an abstract list of rules. Hence, the games
and advice closely fit the particular situations in which children may find
themselves facing uncertainties or perhaps taking risks. The feedback offered
to them when they select the different option is brief, clear, child-friendly
and to the point."
