Are humans descended from apes? The structure of the human body is similar to that of the apes (gorillas, chimpanzees, orang-utans, and gibbons), which are alive today. But this does not mean that humans are directly descended from any of these creatures. Most scientists believe that humans and apes had a common ancestor millions of years ago. Then humans and apes evolved, or developed and changed, in quite different ways.
