Which is the largest country in the world?
|
The Republic of the Russian Federation, called Russia for short, is the world's largest country. With an area of just over 6.5 million miles² (17 million km²), it covers over 10 percent of the world's land area. It stretches from Europe in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east, and from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Mongolian grasslands in the south. The Ural Mountains form the border between Europe and Asia. Russia has fewer than nine people per 0.4 miles² (1 km²), compared with 122 in China, the world's third-largest country. | This region of extremes goes from hot desert in the Arabian Peninsula to cold desert above the Arctic Circle. |
