What is a smart card?

 | | Smart cards could do away with the need for people to carry money with them. |
A smart card is used by telephone companies, banks, and other organisations involved in money transactions. It consists of a piece of plastic similar in size to a credit card. Embedded in it is a tiny computer microprocessor and a memory. A telephone smart card, for example, records the number of units the user has bought in its memory. Each time the card is used, units are deducted from the memory.
