What crops are grown to produce sugar?
|
Sugar comes from two main crops. Sugar beet is a root crop grown in temperate regions. Sugarcane, a type of grass, is grown mostly in tropical countries. In sugar refining, the beet or cane is chopped up and boiled in hot water, from which sugar is crystallised. By-products include treacle and molasses.
