How is yarn made into cloth?
|
Long threads called yarn are woven into cloth on a loom. A hand-operated loom has foot pedals, called treadles, which, when pressed, cause wires to separate the lengthways threads. These are called warp threads. This enables the weaver to pass a shuttle carrying a thread across the loom. This is the weft thread. By pressing different combinations of treadles, the weaver can build a design into the cloth. | Modern mechanised looms work on the same principle as the traditional hand loom, shown here. |
