How does a steam locomotive work? A steam locomotive is a steam engine on wheels. Fuel burning in the firebox heats the water in the boiler until it turns to steam. The steam enters the cylinder and moves the piston. A connecting rod links the piston to a crank on the axle of the main driving wheel, making it turn.
