Which trees make the best timber?
|
There are two types of timber trees. Those with broad leaves, such as oak, ash, and mahogany, are called hard-wood. They take up to 100 years to grow, and the timber is used mainly for furniture. Trees with needle-shaped leaves, such as firs, pines, and spruces, are called softwood trees. Those grown in plantations mature in about seven years. The timber is used to provide wood pulp for paper making and for construction. | The best timber planks are sawed from the middle of a tree trunk. |
