Why was the marketplace important?
Each city in Ancient Greece had its own government. In the 5th century BC, Athens was the most powerful of these cities, and controlled an empire. Its empire brought Athens trade and prosperity, and the marketplace became an important part of city life. It was the city's public business area. Here, people would buy the food they needed. It was here, too, that politics might be discussed. Athens was the first democracy ever. This meant that each citizen could participate in how the city was governed. However, only free men who had been born in Athens were counted as citizens.
