What was the Great Trek?
In 1806 the British captured the Dutch Cape Colony in southern Africa. Many Dutch farmers, called Boers, resented British rule. In 1836, they set off north-eastward with their families on a Great Trek. They settled north of the Orange and Vaal rivers. The wealthy republics they founded now form part of South Africa.
