Why was Babylon important?
|

Babylon stood on the River Euphrates in Mesopotamia (now part of Iraq). At first it was one of a series of small cities. Then Babylon grew in power. By 1700 BC, it controlled an empire, known as Babylonia, which covered the southern part of Mesopotamia. Much of the wealth Babylon gained from the empire was used for building. The Hanging Gardens were a series of irrigated gardens probably built high up on the terraces of ziggurats.
