Why were early steam engines important?

Steam engines allowed industry to develop. The first steam engines were built in the early 1700s. They were used to pump water out of mines. In the 1780s, James Watt produced a steam engine that was much more powerful. This was used to power many machines, including spinning and weaving looms, and farm ploughs and threshers.
