Why does the sound of a racing car engine change as it drives past us?

As the racing car approaches, the sound waves in front of it get squashed together. These short sound waves make the engine's noise sound high-pitched. As the car moves past, the sound waves become stretched out behind it. The longer waves make the engine's note sound lower.
