How does a flood barrier work?
|
The Thames Barrier was opened in 1984 to protect London from flooding. It consists of eight gates, each weighing 3,700 tonnes. They normally lie on the riverbed. If there is any danger of flooding, the gates are rotated to raise them up against the flood water.
