In 1596, Dutch explorer Willem Barents went in search of a Northwest Passage from Europe to Asia. Only after narrowly escaping the savage attack of a polar bear, on land he named Bear Island, was he able to continue the expedition.

Famous explorer David Livingstone nearly lost his life when his boat was overturned in mid-stream by a hippopotamus.

Sailor James Bartley was rescued from the belly of a whale after falling overboard near the Falkland Islands.

In 1567, Spaniard Álvaro de Mendaña set sail from Peru. A day later his ship hit a sleeping whale, but survived! It later lost a mast in a hurricane, but Mendaña carried on, and finally discovered the Solomon Islands.
