First Ever
The first man in space was Colonel Yuri Gagarin. He took off in Vostok 1 from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, then part of the USSR. His record-breaking flight, which took place on April 12, 1961, ended 108 minutes later at Smelovka.
