Sir Richard Burton, 19th-century explorer and orientalist, was a man of many talents. His remarkable translation of The Arabian Nights is still popular today. He became famous when he entered Mecca disguised as a Muslim pilgrim in 1853. Five years later he and Sir John Hanning Speke became the first Westerners to discover and then explore Lake Tanganyika in Africa.
