| Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary finally reach the top of Mount Everest. | In 1873, Isabella Bird Bishop was the first European woman to reach the top of Mauna Loa, the Hawaiian volcano.
In 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing were the first people to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
