Rasputin, favourite of the wife of Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, Alexandra, proved hard to assassinate. He was fed poisoned cakes and wine, shot through the chest, clubbed over the head and thrown into the frozen Neva River. An autopsy revealed he died from drowning.
