A shark’s sense of smell is so good it can detect a drop of blood spilt in the water more than 200 metres away.
The jaws of a small 2.5 metre-long shark can exert a force of 3 tonnes per square centimetre. A large shark can eat through steel cables.
The chances of being attacked by a shark are 30 million to 1 against. But it can happen in water just 1 metre deep.
Some types of shark live in fresh water and can be found swimming up rivers.
When sharks feed in groups they seem to go crazy and bite everything in sight, including each other.
The teeth of the great white shark are as long as 5 centimetres and can tear off a human limb in one bite.
Items found inside sharks’ stomachs include torpedoes, crates of drink and a suit of armour!
Sharks teeth are as hard as steel and are constantly renewed. Teeth at the front of the mouth are replaced by new teeth at the back in a kind of conveyor-belt process.
