Celebrated American showman P.T. Barnum charged people to see a man-eating chicken. The audience saw just that - a man eating a chicken leg! He also displayed a mermaid (in fact a monkey and a fish glued together), and a wizened old lady, whom, he claimed, was aged 161. She was exposed as a hoax after her death.
