What is air?
The layers of the atmosphere absorb and reflect different parts of the Sun's radiation.
The layers of the atmosphere absorb and reflect different parts of the Sun's radiation.
Surrounding the more solid part of our planet are the layers of the Earth's atmosphere. Most of the air we breathe is compressed into the lowest layer, the troposphere. Air is a mixture of gases made up mainly of oxygen and nitrogen, and it supports all life on Earth. Clouds and weather systems are also confined to the troposphere. Higher up the air becomes thinner. In the stratosphere, a layer of ozone helps to filter out the radiation from the Sun, which is harmful to life.
