Are some volcanoes more dangerous than others?
Lava produced from magma coming straight up from the mantle is very runny and erupts in slow lava flows, which form broad, low volcanoes like those in Iceland. If the lava is made of old plate material it is very sticky and erupts explosively and without warning, the way Mount Saint Helens in the United States did.
