How much of the Earth is covered by sea?
Some scientists say we should call our planet 'Water' instead of 'Earth', since water covers about 71 percent of the planet's surface. The area of the ocean surface is 1.40 x (10 to the power of 8) milesē. (3.62 x (10 to the power of 8) kmē). The area of the land surface is 5.75 x (10 to the power of 7) milesē (1.49 x (10 to the power of 8) kmē). There is over 2.4 times as much water area than land area.
A world map shows at a glance just how much of the Earth's surface is covered by water.
