Are tidal waves caused by the tides?
No! tidal waves happen as a result of a great disturbance in the sea. Underwater volcanic eruptions, underwater earthquakes, or landslides into the sea can set up a devastating wave that can travel halfway round the world. Such waves are called 'tsunamis', but are also known as 'tidal waves'.
