What was the Axumite empire?
The Axumite Empire, which stretched from the Red Sea inland across northern Ethiopia to the Nile River, was a major trading power from the 1st to the 7th centuries AD. The kings erected over 100 tall, solid-granite monoliths, called stelae, above the royal tombs as symbols of power. Some were over 30 metres high.
