What was built on the Acropolis?
The Acropolis is a rocky hill overlooking the city of Athens. It was chosen as the site for temples, statues, and ritual buildings, which were among the finest in ancient Greece. The largest building was the Parthenon, a magnificent, white marble temple built between 447 BC and 432 BC in honour of Athena, the goddess of Athens.
The massive temple known as the Parthenon was supported by 46 pillars and had a carved frieze running along all four sides.
