What events took place at the first Olympic Games?
Every four years, from 776 BC, about 40,000 spectators would flock to Olympia to see the best Greek athletes compete in games held in honour of the god Zeus. Running races were held in the stadium; the track was up to 192 metres long. Wrestling was popular, and could be won by throwing your opponent three times. Javelin throwing was encouraged too, because javelin or spear throwing was a useful skill in wartime. During the games, all wars were banned and personal feuds were forgotten.
There was no greater honour for an athlete than to win at Olympia.
