Did the Romans worship many gods?
|
| Mars was the Roman god of war and the guardian of Rome. It was believed he would avenge any wrong. | There were many Roman gods, each of which was believed to watch over a different activity of daily life. Sacrifices were made to keep them happy. Many of the gods and goddesses were the same as ancient Greek ones, but with different names. The most important was Jupiter (the Greek god Zeus). As well as their own gods, the Romans often worshiped gods from the countries they conquered. In the late Roman Empire, Christianity became the official religion.
