What was Jerusalem like when Jesus was there?
The city of Jerusalem has been in existence since at least 3000 BC. Herod the Great shaped the city as it is described in the Bible at the time of Jesus. The most important buildings in the city at that time were Herod's palace, the temple, the fortress where Jesus probably stood trial before Pontius Pilate, and the High Priest's house. The Garden of Gethsemane (where Jesus was arrested) and Golgotha (the crucifixion ground) were outside the city walls.
