King Herod, also known as Herod the Great, was appointed king of Judaea by the Roman senate in 37 BC. This was in return for his loyalty to Rome. Under Herod, Judaea remained part of the Roman Empire. He reigned until his death in 4 BC. | The Upper Palace in Jerusalem built in King Herod's time |
