Was food plentiful in Biblical times?
The word 'famine' occurs over a hundred times in the Bible. The rains often did not come, which meant that food crops like cereals could not be sown in the rockhard ground after a dry summer. But fruit and vegetables were grown, and grapes were eaten fresh or pressed to make wine.
Once the wheat was harvested, it was threshed to extract the grain. This was ground into flour to make bread.
