Did the Japanese build castles?
Many castles were built in Japan by powerful warlords, especially between 1568 and 1600. The walls were made from enormous stones fitted together without cement. Inside, they were often beautifully painted. One of the finest surviving Japanese castles is Himeji-jo. The original building dated from the 14th century, but it was greatly enlarged about 1600.
Himeji-jo has an intricate defensive system of moats, compounds, and gates.
