What was the religion of ancient Japan?
The religion of ancient Japan began about 400 AD. It is known as Shinto, and is still practised. Believers see higher spirits, called kami, in all aspects of nature. Offerings to these spirits are made at shrines, in the hope that the person will be rewarded. Buddhism was introduced from China in 552.
