Who were the samurai?
|
Originally the samurai were guards, but by the 12th century they were highly respected warriors who formed the strongest part of society. They fought for the nobles, and were famed for their loyalty. In return they were rewarded with land and riches. The samurai fought hand-to-hand battles and carried razor-sharp swords. The sword was the symbol of a samurai's honour. The strict training that a samurai received was passed on from one generation to the next. | Around 1560, samurai armour was made from plates of metal tied together with silk threads. |
