What caused the English Civil War?
|
This was a war between King Charles I of England and his parliament. For many years before war broke out there was a growing struggle between the king and Parliament. Charles believed that it should not try to take away his powers. But some Members of Parliament began to demand a greater part in running the country. This power struggle led to civil war breaking out in 1642. In 1649 Charles was executed. Parliament won the war in 1651. | Parliamentarian soldiers on horseback confront supporters of the king, called Royalists. |
