In 321 BC, Chandragupta Maurya came to power. His empire spread across northern India from its capital in present-day Patna. Chandragupta's grandson, Ashoka, hugely extended it until it unified the subcontinent, stretching for 1,000 miles (1,600 km) north to south, and 2,000 miles (3,200 km) east to west.
