What did the Moguls build?
The Moguls built some of the most magnificent palaces, fortresses, and mosques in the world. One of the most famous examples is the deserted city of Fatehpur Sikri, near Agra, which was built in 1570 by the Emperor Akbar as his new capital at the height of the empire's splendour. It was occupied for only 16 years. Equally impressive is the Red Fort in Delhi, built by Emperor Shah Jahan about 1638. He moved his capital to Delhi from Agra. The palace is surrounded by a great fortified citadel.
The Red Fort in Delhi, a magnificent example of Mogul architecture, contains decorated pavilions, marble palaces, courtyards, and galleries within its 30 metres high red-sandstone walls.
