What did people eat?
Most people lived in the country and grew their own food: for example, apples, oats, peas, beans, and barley. Poor people ate mostly vegetables and bread. Meat was too expensive. The rich ate mostly meat. Fish was always eaten on Fridays, and salted meat was eaten in winter. Fresh meat like chicken, beef, wild deer, and pork was eaten in the summer. Everyone, including children, drank beer.
Country people brought eggs, cheese, vegetables, fruit, and livestock to town to sell at market.
