What was a Renaissance palace like?
The rulers of Renaissance Europe lived in magnificent palaces. In Italy, which had been the centre of the Roman Empire, there were many ancient buildings still standing. Renaissance architects studied them and began to design new buildings using columns, domes, and rounded arches. The new classical style of architecture was copied all over Europe.
The castle of Chambord in France, completed in 1547 for King Francis I, shows the extravagant grandeur of the French Renaissance court.
