Henry VII (1485-1509)was the only English king to be crowned on the battlefield
Many of Europe's rulers became extremely powerful during the Renaissance. Some countries, like England, were kingdoms ruled by kings and queens. In Italy and Germany, nobles ruled over small, separate states. The power and riches of these kings, princes, and nobles drew many people to their courts. Rulers all over Europe tried to outshine each other by building elaborate palaces, collecting works of art, and holding pageants.
